This Week’s Idea

We are going to war with $40 billion dollar industry, here’s how.

Did you know that some of the biggest brands started as completely different businesses?

For example, YouTube was originally a video dating site called “Tune In Hook Up.” When the dating concept failed to take off, the founders noticed people were using it to share random cat videos instead. So they pivoted. Now, YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world.

It’s a great reminder that the best ideas often come from unexpected shifts in direction. Stay flexible, and don’t be afraid to adapt!

  • Don’t go chasing ideas (I know, hear me out)

  • Ideas have expiration dates

  • We are going to war

DON’T GO CHASING IDEAS

In the late 90’s, a group of friends wanted to create a new drink. They experimented with different flavors, but nothing felt groundbreaking. Instead of forcing a brand-new idea, they took a step back and noticed an untapped market. Enhanced water with a cool brand.

That simple shift led to Vitaminwater, which later sold to Coca-Cola for $4.1 billion.

The lesson? You don’t always need a revolutionary idea. Sometimes, the best opportunities come from improving what already exists. Don’t chase ideas, instead let them come to you.

IDEAS HAVE EXPIRATION DATES

My brothers and I once had our own version of Shark Tank. We must have been around 13 years old, but the concept was there. We would sit in a circle, and write down our problems, then come up with a solution. What was our problem? We were hungry, car-less, and had no money.

The solution was simple. There should be a way for someone to bring you food which then you would pay them for bringing you the food.

We were young, dumb, and full of bright ideas. We all thought that it was a crazy concept.

Fast forward many years, Instacart traded a six-pack of beer for a $8.9 billion valuation. Truth is, take action on your ideas before they expire.

P.S: Send them my way to be featured on the next newsletter!

WE ARE GOING TO WAR WITH RENTAL STORAGE UNITS

We only need some empty space.

Remember how I mentioned in the last newsletter that you avoided a 10 car pileup just to make it to the gym? Great, you also avoided another car pileup just by driving to the self storage to pick up your bike. Do people really rent these?

My friend, you have absolutely come to the right place. ButterIdeas is all about talking smack about other businesses, especially brick and mortar. We are here to help you learn about new concepts so let’s get started.

We are definitely going to war with self serve storage units.

Can you please help me here? You are really telling me that you are paying someone a lot of money to hold onto your stuff miles away from you? On top of that, you have to drive to that location to pick up your stuff? Once you get there, someone doesn’t just grab your stuff and hand to you? Oh, and you are allowed to visit during business hours?

The $40 Billion dollar storage industry is ripe for disruption. Just know that the empty space in your home, that you call a garage, is costing you thousands of dollars every month.

I am about to blow your mind.

I spend a lot of time looking at the largest industries and their many inefficiencies. As mentioned, the self serve storage industry was recently valued at $40 billion. This industry is only going to get bigger financially and physically. Personally, I think that self serve storage units look like mini ghost towns.

Alright, before we continue I would truly appreciate it if you sent this email to your top two closest friends. Can be anyone, but the goals is that they have to sign up.

Big storage companies don’t want you to know this, but there is a universe where you can turn your empty garage space into passive income. You know the people in your neighborhood and nowadays everyone has cameras all over their homes. On top of that, people also have a secondary door lock from the garage to their mudroom.

There is no such thing as this is unsafe.

In my opinion, the AirBnB of storage is the next big thing. Why? Because this requires no additional development. Guest are able to simply book the extra space in your garage, and if it suits their needs for storing their snow equipment for the season, at a much more reasonable price, they will.

I know many people that have multiple garages and only use a fraction of the space. Sounds like money is being tossed into the trash can. Team, help each other go on more vacations by renting your neighbor’s garage.

We are now at war, let’s disrupt!

Self serve storage is broken, overpriced, inconvenient, and controlled by massive companies. But what if storage was local, affordable, and built around people, for people?

Here is how we can truly disrupt the industry. Here is your chance to be the smartest person in the room.

Traditional storage units charge premium rates. By leveraging existing garage spaces, we eliminate overhead and offer much lower prices.

Make it convenient. No more long drives to a storage facility. Rent space from someone right in your neighborhood.

Scale fast, target urban areas with high storage demand, onboard garage owners with passive income incentives, and use referral programs to grow.
